    The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate II position to work as a Data Management Specialist at the Physical Oceanography Department (PhOD) at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (NOAA/AOML).

     The successful applicant will provide scientific support such as data processing, auditing, editing, reporting, etc. The incumbent will support software development, data analysis, data management, product development and operations of a suite of observing platforms, such as XBTs (eXpendable BathyThermograph), underwater gliders, satellites, etc. Duties include but are not limited to contribute to the development, updating, maintenance and improvement of data quality control, data processing, generating graphics, and web sites development and maintenance.

     DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    • Assist with developing software as needed for XBT, underwater glider, and satellite data analysis. Assist with developing software to create and maintain online products to be updated automatically, using data from the above-mentioned instruments.
    • The employee will create and maintain web pages to display products obtained from the above projects, maintain and improve software programs for the monitoring of upper ocean water mass properties and dynamic features.
    • The employee will process data and generate graphic to extract useful scientific and operational information regarding temporal and/or spatial variability of the upper ocean for weather, ocean, climate, and fisheries studies.
    • Assist with the maintenance of the web pages of the XBT and underwater glider related projects.

     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • The successful applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics or related field, and at least two years of relevant experience in database management and software development for data processing.
    • Necessary technical skills include programming in Matlab, Python, shell scripts, and php for web pages.
    • It is preferred that the incumbent also has knowledge of software and automatizing data processing systems in various programming languages, such as C, Python, and Java, within the Linux operating system.

    The Department of RSMAS - CIMAS has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Sr. Research Associate to work in the RSMAS campus. This position is situated in the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS).  The principal objective of the position will be to provide scientific support such as data processing, auditing, editing, reporting, etc.  The work will involve close collaboration with scientists at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML).

     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) and Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate II.


    This position is situated within the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS). The work will involve close collaboration with scientists at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), where the applicant will be physically stationed. The principal objective of the position will be to build and manage a cutting-edge
    molecular biology laboratory to support NOAA’s growing efforts in ‘Omics. The incumbent will use a variety of ‘Omics tools (e.g., metabarcoding, metagenomics, & transcriptomics) to help meet mission objectives, including work with harmful algal blooms (HABs), coral conservation, and fisheries. The incumbent will carry out a variety of tasks (detailed below) to ensure that AOML’s ‘Omics laboratories are both operational and compliant.
    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    ● maintaining clean, organized, and safe laboratory spaces associated with molecular biological sample processing and analysis,
    ● maintaining consumable inventories, providing timely ordering of supplies and rectification of purchases,
    ● maintaining equipment, including scheduling of service and overseeing maintenance contracts,
    ● maintaining clean and organized refrigerators and freezers,
    ● working with a data manager to ensure proper sample archiving, which includes maintaining a trackable system of physical samples in freezers and the metadata associated with samples on online database(s),
    ● ensuring that the ‘Omics labs are compliant with OSHA and other regulatory agencies with respect to hazardous materials, personnel training, proper chemical storage and disposal, biological safety, etc., in collaboration with AOML safety personnel and committees,
    ● arranging and scheduling use of laboratory spaces and equipment usage, and
    ● assisting with the orientation of new laboratory personnel and providing training on equipment use, commonly used protocols, and standards.
    Opportunities may also include assisting with laboratory and field work associated with various ‘Omics projects.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    ● The successful applicant must possess at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, marine science, or a related field, with at least 2 years of demonstrated experience working in a molecular laboratory.
    ● The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and proactive with respect to laboratory maintenance/upkeep and the streamlining of laboratory operations, yet still be adept at working as part of a large team comprised of multiple PIs, research scientists, graduate, and undergraduate students who will be using the laboratory spaces.
    ● Keen leadership, organizational, and communications skills will be critical since there is an expectation that the incumbent will need to coordinate extensively among the diverse lab users referenced above.
    ● The incumbent will be expected to routinely meet with both supervisors and laboratory users (NOAA and Cooperative Institute scientists, as well as interns).
    ● The incumbent may occasionally need to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and could have opportunities to participate in field work that could require movement across uneven environmental terrain such as beach sand, shallow waters, or work aboard small boats orresearch vessels.

  • RSMAS - Research Associate I - CIMAS - R100048785

    The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a temporary Research Associate I to work in Miami FL, supporting NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division.

     This Research Associate I will be responsible for the nutrient related chemical oceanography needs of the division, including mixing reagents, creating standards, maintaining lab chemicals, records and equipment, ordering needed materials and entering and QA/QCing data. They will also be trained to analyze nutrient samples taken at sea during oceanographic research cruises and returned to the lab.

     Responsibilities include:

    • Lab management and safety maintenance.
    • Preparation of reagents and standards utilized in the analysis of Nutrients.
    • Assist in the completion of routine statistical tests necessary for the continuation of sample analysis.
    • Maintain lab equipment and carry out routine weight and calibration checks to ensure proper functionality. 
    • Aid in the maintenance of lab records in compliance with NELAC accreditation and our labs standard operating procedures.
    • Help with the disposal of samples following the completion of analysis. Properly clean and store labware and field sampling kits for ongoing projects.
    • The applicant over time will learn how to Analyze Dissolved Inorganic Nutrient samples on a Gas segmented flow autoanalyzer. Including but not limited to (NO2, NO3, Si, PO4, NH4, TKN, TDP/TP). Will assist in the analysis and processing of samples.
    • Assist in inventorying and ordering needed chemicals, supplies and lab equipment.

     MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical oceanography or a related field.
    • The work will require lab analysis of ocean samples, communication and planning with researchers, provision of reagents, standards and needed chemicals,
    • QA/QC data entry and maintenance of lab records.
    • Some experience in an environmental lab setting preferred.
    • Experience in calibrating lab equipment, maintaining meticulous records and standard operating procedures and an understanding of nutrient dynamics in coastal and offshore waters preferred.

  • RSMAS - Postdoctoral Associate - CIMAS - R100045909

    The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in Physical Oceanography. The research involves using state-of-the-art numerical model simulations to assess and to improve predictions of severe convective storm activity over the United States on subseasonal timescales (i.e., 10-40 days).

    The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing several high-resolution numerical weather forecasts using GFDL’s Unified Forecast System (USF). He or she will assess the skill of the USF model for predicting severe storms and other hazards (e.g., tornado outbreak, severe wind, extreme rainfall, hail, etc.) on S2S timescales. The incumbent will also investigate whether convection and remote teleconnections from the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) are well represented in the UFS, and help improve the prediction of severe convective storm sand other hazards over the United States. The successful candidate will also develop hybrid statistical-dynamical forecast tools in combination with the predictions from the UFS to inform the CPC operations and stakeholders of US regional severe storm outbreak risks. The successful candidate will be responsible for actively participating in scientific discussions among AOML, GFDL, SPC, NSSL, and CPC; presenting findings at scientific meetings; and publishing results in scientific journals.

    Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Meteorology, Physical Oceanography, or a related field and a demonstrated ability in publishing results in peer-reviewed journals. Highly desirable qualifications include knowledge of Unix/Linux and the ability to analyze large datasets from model outputs. Prior experience with deterministic and probabilistic prediction skill assessment is desirable, but not required.

    The Department of Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Postdoctoral Associate to work in Miami, FL.

    We seek a postdoctoral associate to join our group and work as a biologist in the Marine Mammal Program of the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center.  The incumbent’s primary activities will be developing and implementing a framework to assess the risk of interactions between vessels and North Atlantic right whales using information on whale distribution and abundance, vessel traffic, and models of encounter and mortality rates.

     Candidates for this position should have:

    (1) Ph.D. in oceanography, marine biology, statistics, or related discipline

    (2) demonstrated experience in programming languages such as R or Matlab

    (3) previous experience working with large, spatially explicit data sets

    (4) the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team

    (5) demonstrated technical writing ability

    (6) demonstrated ability to work independently to complete complex tasks.

    The position will be located at the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center, Marine Mammal and Turtle Division located in Miami, FL. Remote work may be required due to considerations related to COVID-19.

    The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Programmer II position to work in Miami. The position is within the Physical Oceanography Division of NOAA/AOML. The incumbent will be developing software for the US Argo Data Assembly Center (DAC). Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Writing software in higher level languages (mainly Fortran, Java, C/C++)
    • Design/develop robust software packages;
    • Writing shell scripts;
    • Transition software to operational application;
    • Document what the code does and how it needs to be used;
    • Contribute to monitoring of the processing system as well as reprocessing of data.

    Minimum Qualifications:

           Applicants must have a Bachelors degree or higher in computer science, information technology, or related fields and 3 years of relevant work related experience.

    The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami in Miami, FL, invites applicants for a Research Associate position (1-year term limited, no benefits). We seek an individual to join the Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division supporting coastal fieldwork, and laboratory analyses at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, FL.

    This position will utilize a solid foundation in coastal ecology fieldwork, data collection, data QA/QC and lab analysis techniques, including water quality laboratory work. Beneficial experience can include work in environmental data analyses and habitat assessment. Certification in small boat operations preferred but not required.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Conducting fieldwork on small and large research vessels.
    • Conducting ecological field work, including water quality, benthic habitat monitoring, and small fish community assessments
    • Processing and database entry and management of nutrient, chlorophyll and microbial analyses from water samples.
    • Participate in and provide logistical organization and support for small boat fieldwork operations in Biscayne Bay and coastal areas.
    • This work will be done in hot temperatures, sometimes adverse weather conditions and at sea on boats.
    • When necessary, assist the group in other laboratory sample analyses and data entry, data QA/QC, and database management as well as computational and statistical analysis when required.

     
    Requirements:

    Candidates for this position should have a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology/Ecology, Biochemistry, Oceanography, or a related field experience, and a minimum of one year (more preferred) of demonstrated experience in (1) Biscayne Bay (or similar region) fieldwork and parametrization (2) Ocean chemistry laboratory work or related lab work  (3) participating in and leading field surveys including small boat driving experience (4) the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team, including during overnight research vessel surveys and fieldwork trips away from Miami for up to 12 days at a time, and (5) excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills, good organizational skills, meticulous laboratory methods, and the ability and availability to participate in and support fieldwork trips, including the ability to conduct work on uneven terrain and the ability to lift 50 pounds. Experience with R or GIS preferred but not required.

    This position is situated at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS). The work will involve close collaboration with scientists at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and will be physically stationed at AOML. The principal objective of the position will be to accelerate the usage of NOAA’s ’omics data through best practices in metadata collection (environmental data) and management of ‘omics data (e.g., metagenetic, metagenomic, metatranscriptomic) to ensure availability to bioinformatic analysis. This data management position will involve an end-to-end process that includes acquisition, quality control, validation, processing, storage, retrieval, dissemination, and long-term preservation activities.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • The successful applicant must possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in data management, bioinformatics, marine science, or a related field with demonstrated experience working with biodiversity and environmental data.
    • The successful candidate will have basic knowledge of databases and scripting environments for data processing, UNIX systems, and the command line, demonstrated experience working with large data sets and spreadsheets, and project management.
    • The successful candidate should have experience with data management best practices and tools for ocean science and ’omics, including data and metadata formats and the formulation and implementation of data management plans.
    • The most qualified candidates will also have familiarity with relational databases, web servers, the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS), GitHub, data visualization, and biological big data (e.g., metagenomics).
