The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate II position to work as a Data Management Specialist at the Physical Oceanography Department (PhOD) at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (NOAA/AOML). The Department of RSMAS - CIMAS has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Sr. Research Associate to work in the RSMAS campus. This position is situated in the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS). The principal objective of the position will be to provide scientific support such as data processing, auditing, editing, reporting, etc. The work will involve close collaboration with scientists at the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). This position is situated within the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS). The work will involve close collaboration with scientists at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), where the applicant will be physically stationed. The principal objective of the position will be to build and manage a cutting-edge
molecular biology laboratory to support NOAA’s growing efforts in ‘Omics. The incumbent will use a variety of ‘Omics tools (e.g., metabarcoding, metagenomics, & transcriptomics) to help meet mission objectives, including work with harmful algal blooms (HABs), coral conservation, and fisheries. The incumbent will carry out a variety of tasks (detailed below) to ensure that AOML’s ‘Omics laboratories are both operational and compliant.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
● maintaining clean, organized, and safe laboratory spaces associated with molecular biological sample processing and analysis,
● maintaining consumable inventories, providing timely ordering of supplies and rectification of purchases,
● maintaining equipment, including scheduling of service and overseeing maintenance contracts,
● maintaining clean and organized refrigerators and freezers,
● working with a data manager to ensure proper sample archiving, which includes maintaining a trackable system of physical samples in freezers and the metadata associated with samples on online database(s),
● ensuring that the ‘Omics labs are compliant with OSHA and other regulatory agencies with respect to hazardous materials, personnel training, proper chemical storage and disposal, biological safety, etc., in collaboration with AOML safety personnel and committees,
● arranging and scheduling use of laboratory spaces and equipment usage, and
● assisting with the orientation of new laboratory personnel and providing training on equipment use, commonly used protocols, and standards.
Opportunities may also include assisting with laboratory and field work associated with various ‘Omics projects.
● The successful applicant must possess at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, marine science, or a related field, with at least 2 years of demonstrated experience working in a molecular laboratory.
● The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and proactive with respect to laboratory maintenance/upkeep and the streamlining of laboratory operations, yet still be adept at working as part of a large team comprised of multiple PIs, research scientists, graduate, and undergraduate students who will be using the laboratory spaces.
● Keen leadership, organizational, and communications skills will be critical since there is an expectation that the incumbent will need to coordinate extensively among the diverse lab users referenced above.
● The incumbent will be expected to routinely meet with both supervisors and laboratory users (NOAA and Cooperative Institute scientists, as well as interns).
● The incumbent may occasionally need to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and could have opportunities to participate in field work that could require movement across uneven environmental terrain such as beach sand, shallow waters, or work aboard small boats orresearch vessels.
The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a temporary Research Associate I to work in Miami FL, supporting NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystem Division. This Research Associate I will be responsible for the nutrient related chemical oceanography needs of the division, including mixing reagents, creating standards, maintaining lab chemicals, records and equipment, ordering needed materials and entering and QA/QCing data. The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in Physical Oceanography. The research involves using state-of-the-art numerical model simulations to assess and to improve predictions of severe convective storm activity over the United States on subseasonal timescales (i.e., 10-40 days). The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing several high-resolution numerical weather forecasts using GFDL’s Unified Forecast System (USF). He or she will assess the skill of the USF model for predicting severe storms and other hazards (e.g., tornado outbreak, severe wind, extreme rainfall, hail, etc.) on S2S timescales. The incumbent will also investigate whether convection and remote teleconnections from the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) are well represented in the UFS, and help improve the prediction of severe convective storm sand other hazards over the United States. The successful candidate will also develop hybrid statistical-dynamical forecast tools in combination with the predictions from the UFS to inform the CPC operations and stakeholders of US regional severe storm outbreak risks. The successful candidate will be responsible for actively participating in scientific discussions among AOML, GFDL, SPC, NSSL, and CPC; presenting findings at scientific meetings; and publishing results in scientific journals. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Meteorology, Physical Oceanography, or a related field and a demonstrated ability in publishing results in peer-reviewed journals. Highly desirable qualifications include knowledge of Unix/Linux and the ability to analyze large datasets from model outputs. The Department of Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Postdoctoral Associate to work in Miami, FL. We seek a postdoctoral associate to join our group and work as a biologist in the Marine Mammal Program of the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center. The incumbent’s primary activities will be developing and implementing a framework to assess the risk of interactions between vessels and North Atlantic right whales using information on whale distribution and abundance, vessel traffic, and models of encounter and mortality rates. Candidates for this position should have: (1) Ph.D. in oceanography, marine biology, statistics, or related discipline (2) demonstrated experience in programming languages such as R or Matlab (3) previous experience working with large, spatially explicit data sets (4) the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team (5) demonstrated technical writing ability (6) demonstrated ability to work independently to complete complex tasks. We seek an individual to join the Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division supporting coastal fieldwork, and laboratory analyses at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, FL. This position will utilize a solid foundation in coastal ecology fieldwork, data collection, data QA/QC and lab analysis techniques, including water quality laboratory work. Beneficial experience can include work in environmental data analyses and habitat assessment. Certification in small boat operations preferred but not required.
Requirements:
Candidates for this position should have a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology/Ecology, Biochemistry, Oceanography, or a related field experience, and a minimum of one year (more preferred) of demonstrated experience in (1) Biscayne Bay (or similar region) fieldwork and parametrization (2) Ocean chemistry laboratory work or related lab work (3) participating in and leading field surveys including small boat driving experience (4) the ability and desire to work as part of a collaborative team, including during overnight research vessel surveys and fieldwork trips away from Miami for up to 12 days at a time, and (5) excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills, good organizational skills, meticulous laboratory methods, and the ability and availability to participate in and support fieldwork trips, including the ability to conduct work on uneven terrain and the ability to lift 50 pounds. Experience with R or GIS preferred but not required.
