Dunnel Fennell participated in the CIMAS/MDC internship program in 2024. He worked on a microbial ecology computer-focused (bioinformatics) project that involved taking bacterial sequence data (16S) from Pacific coral to a point where it is ready for statistical analysis. He gained experience in command-line based coding and ran various statistical analyses. He worked with mentor Dr. Nick MacKnight in the Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division at NOAA AOML. Before his internship, Dunnel earned a Bachelor of Biological Science degree in Biotechnology from Miami Dade College. Dunnel was fortunate enough to extend his internship and present his work at a local conference at the Frost Science Museum.
