Evaluating NOAA Hurricane Analysis and Forecast Systems

Hurricane Hurricane

Evaluating NOAA Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System real-time experiments

Mentor:

Dr. Lewis (Lew) Gramer

Lew Gramer began as a Research Associate I at CIMAS in 2005. He received his PhD in oceanography from University of Miami in 2013 while working at CIMAS, and began doing research on hurricane forecast modeling in 2019. He is part of the team which operationalized the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS) in 2023, and continues to research improvements in HAFS.

Format:

Hybrid

Brief description:

The student will work with the Hurricane Research Division at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. The student will analyze graphical and data products comparing hurricane forecasts from different versions of Hurricane Analysis and Forecast Systems (HAFS, operational and experimental), looking for important differences between those versions in either meteorological or ocean characteristics. An interest in meteorology and/or oceanography, and a desire to learn more about tropical cyclones in particular, are key. Any skills in data analysis or python programming would be very helpful, but not required: a desire to learn these skills is definitely encouraged.
